The Government is prepared to strengthen public transport. The project to reintroduce repaired buses to the existing fleets is being continuously carried out throughout the country.
The Transport Ministry has launched a programme to repair the buses that have been so far abandoned and put them back into service. 105 buses were redeployed at the Kataragama depot under the patronage of Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake. The Government has spent nearly 500 thousand rupees to effect repairs to each bus. The Government is expecting to increase the number of buses operated in the country up to 6000. It is expected to increase the current income of 43 million rupees up to 50 million. The Government has also taken measures to add 64 new engines and make the train service more efficient.
