Jan 1, 2011 6:41:09 AM - itnnews.lk

Chicken is being imported to make adequate stocks available in the market and control its price. The government is prepared to protect the consumer as well as the trader during the festive season.

Addressing newsmen, Minister Johnston Fernando said that his promise was to issue chicken to the market only if there would be a shortage and a price increase. He said that the decision to sell chicken at the maximum price of 350 rupees was also made by the Government. The policy of the Government is to protect the consumer as well as the trader. Chicken is being sold at 350 rupees only at the Lak-sathosa outlets and it will never be issued to the market. He said that according to an article in the paper the chicken price had dropped due to a conspiracy of the Minister. He further said that he and Minister Thondaman had imported 5000 tons of chicken from India and already issued to the market. Nothing had been issued to the market. Only 150 tons were imported from India. It was reported that a businessman had said that un-skinned chicken can be provided at 150 per kilogram as there are two million kilos of additional stocks. He invited the businessmen to bring it over to him. He said that he is able to buy the stocks and keep it under refrigeration to be used during a shortage.
