The President has ended the era in which the children were directed to engage in terrorist activities, driving them to be child soldiers.
Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody made this observation at a function organized by the UN Friendship Organization. The Deputy Speaker said that at every moment the number of children who lost their parents was increasing. In the 2004 Tsunami, children lost their parents and parents lost their children. He said that terrorism was eliminated amongst such challenges to create children who lead happy lives. He said that it is during this decade that the President formed a Ministry on behalf of children. He said that the President introduced the State policy of providing the best for the children.
The function was organized to mark the ‘International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence’ for the Children and the International Year of the Youth. Special awards were presented to Helmut Kutin who pioneered the SOS Children’s Village concept and the President of the SOS International Organisation and representatives of the organization. Minister Sumeda G. Jayasena was amongst a large number of people who were present.
