The Health Ministry has stressed that free medical treatment will not be provided for patients who suffer from diseases related to the consumption of alcohol and smoking.
The patients who suffer from diseases as a result of alcohol consumption and smoking will have to pay their medical bills if the Doctors will decide that the cause for the illness is alcohol abuse or smoking. Programmes are being launched island-wide to raise awareness among the people about the consequences of alcohol abuse. The aim of the “Mathata Thitha” programme of the Government is to distance the society from alcohol and cigarettes. In addition raids are also being carried out. It has been concluded that those who are addicted to alcohol despite these efforts, should not be provided free treatment. The Ministry of Health has therefore decided to make such patients pay for their treatment from this month.
