Torrential rain and strong winds affect normal life in the South

Jan 2, 2011 12:33:12 PM - itnnews.lk

Torrential rain and strong winds in several places in the Southern Province have affected normal life.

Hungama area on the Tangalla – Ambalantota main road has been inundated following torrential rains experienced since yesterday, due to the spilling of Kachchigal-ara. The traffic movement on the main road has been disrupted. Meanwhile, due to the breach of the bund of a small tank in Hambantota, several areas have gone under water. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has intervened to provide relief for the displaced people belonging to around 200 families. The Minister who looked into their welfare also inspected the tank.

A special programme has been launched by the Divisional Secretariat and the Disaster Management Centre to provide relief to the people who are affected due to the strong winds that suddenly swept the Matara area. Around 70 families have been displaced in Isadin town in Matara and Hiththetiya, Welegoda and Pamburana areas due to the strong winds experienced in the area last evening. The winds have caused serious damage to around 10 houses. A special discussion was held under the patronage of District Secretary Mrs. K.K. Athukorala to provide relief for them.
