The government has taken steps to re-introduce all crops that had been cultivated in the North prior to the war.
Governor of the Northern Province Major General G. A. Chandrasiri said that the government was planning to cultivate another 40,000 acres of abandoned lands in 2011. He said that plans are underway to cultivate black gram on 19,786 acres across the five districts of the province and groundnuts on 7,231 acres, red onions on 4,709 acres, green chillies on 4,329 acres and cowpea on 4,729 acres. He opined that the government had already started rehabilitating the irrigation systems damaged by the war. The Maha Season is the main cultivation season for the Northern farmers. The Governor pointed out that according to statistics, the extent of cultivated land in the province had increased by 60 per cent during the year 2010.
