Permission will be required from the relevant Universities to conduct classes for the external degree courses of Universities.
The University Grants Commission has made this decision in order to improve the quality of external degree courses. The Grants Commission recently suspended registration of students for external degrees. Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Gamini Samaranayke said that the number of students registered for external degree courses has reached a very high level. He also said that the quality of the courses were also found lacking while professional qualifications of the teachers of the classes have also posed problems. The University Grants Commission has setup a permanent committee to look into the issue. External degree courses are being offered in 11 Universities.
