The train services between Colombo Fort and Omanthai will resume at the end of this month.
The rail track has been constructed up to Omanthai under the Northern Railway Development Project. Earlier the trains were operated only up to Vavuniya. The rail track was developed and trains were operated up to Thandikulam after the project was launched. The Northern railway development project is being implemented under three phases. In the first phase the trains are operated from Vavuniya to Omanthai and from Omanthai to Palai in the second phase. In the third phase the services will be extended from Palai to Kankesanthurai. The Department of Railways has said that 159 kilometers are being developed under the project that includes 85 bridges, 58 culverts, 16 railway stations and 12 sub stations.
