For 20 years, doughnuts have run along a series of signature conveyer belts all the way up to the ceiling of the Krispy Kreme building on Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce as children and the young at heart gazed at them through a glass wall.
When the refurbished doughnut store opens today, those belts will be gone - replaced by a streamlined, floor-level model.
The doughnuts will still be the same, and you'll still be able to watch them through the glass wall.
What is different is the amount of time it takes the sweet, doughy concoctions to cool after they are fried - only five minutes with new "cooling tunnel" technology versus about 25 minutes on the old model.
The store also will have the new Kool Kreme ice cream line and espresso-based drinks, like those offered in a store that opened in Lexington last year.
