Former UNP Parliamentarian Mohamed Maharoof who had been arrested for criminal breach of trust after cheques worth 1.7 million rupees issued by him bounced back, has been enlarged on bail.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court granted him bail. Submitting a report, the Colombo Crimes division said that the suspect had provided cheques to the value of 1.7 million rupees during a land transaction. However, the cheques had bounced back. His lawyers informed the Court that the suspect was willing to pay the related cash in instalments to the plaint. Accordingly, he was released on a personal bail of 15 million rupees. The Court further ordered him to make the related payment in three instalments. The passport of Mr. Maharoof was also retained by the Court. The case will be taken up again on the 8th of February.
