The Health Ministry has a three year plan to bring under control the increase in non-infectious diseases in Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, a Medical Officer on non-infectious diseases will be appointed for all districts. The Health Ministry has decided to set up three advisory centres on such diseases for each district. The Health Ministry said these decisions were reached at a special discussions chaired by Minister Maithripala Sirisena. It was attended by regional as well as Provincial Health Officers. The Minister handed over equipment needed for 70 non-infectious advisory centres. Nearly 350 deaths are reported daily due to non-infectious diseases. Among the main diseases are high blood pressure, Diabetes, Cancer, Kidney, Eye and Dental. Minister Sirisena emphasised the support of all related sectors should be solicited for the implementation of the new programme to control non-infectious diseases.
