Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne is of the view that the colossal investment made for the development of the educational sector is a decisive factor for the country’s future.
The Prime Minister was speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the National Partners of the “Room to Read Institution.
The Prime Minister referred to the importance of studying all three languages. He pointed out that special attention was focused on education this year. The President has announced in the Budget the measures that were being adopted for the development of the economy. He added that if these two sectors develop, it would be possible to build a nation that would live happily.
Room to Read is implementing many programmes to improve primary education in remote areas. Developing 135 schools, building 60 libraries and awarding 4000 scholarships to school children are among the many programmes planned for the next two years. The agreement signed with the Education Ministry for this work was presented to the Prime Minister. Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Deputy Minister Gamini Vijith Vijithamuni Soysa and Sri Lanka Director of Room to Read Institution Glen Pri de Mel were among those present.
