President Rajapaksa has pointed out that with the dawn of the New Year, the era has dawned to realize the expectations of development launched during the humanitarian operations.
The President made this reference addressing the staff of the Finance Ministry for the New Year this morning. The Finance Ministry has been vested with a decisive task in the journey towards the development of the country. The President asserted the need for dedication of the Finance Ministry officials as well as the entire public service. Underlining the significance of spiritual development within the people in parallel to economic development, the President referred to the need for public support in the country’s development process.
The programmes already mooted by the Government to carry forward the country, has earned international acclamation. Also, many programmes are in operation to uplift the agricultural sector. The President officially launched the National Economic Programme for this year. Giving his views, Finance Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera said 2010 was an year which achieved economic victories surpassing the desired goals. He was confident that Sri Lanka had the ability of reaching a 10 percent economic growth by the year 2016. At present, it is around eight percent. Senior Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Deputy Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena were present.
