The Government has given priority to uplift the lives of the people in the North. Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka giving evidence before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) said that the highest allocations had been made for this purpose.
The Minister said that the Government has allocated 39 billion rupees for the power sector in the country while 18 billion rupees has been allocated under the Uthuru Wasanthaya Programme to supply power to the North. It amounts to nearly half of the total allocation. He said that to resettle the people, and provide infrastructure such as roads, power and water supply the government and the security forces had taken measures that are incomparable to any other country. Resettlement is being carried out mostly with grants provided by the local population and labour from the security forces. The Minister pointed out that the people are extending more support towards the purpose in comparison with those who hold protest marches in foreign countries.
