The Army is making a vital contribution in extending relief to consumers.
It will join in a programme of directly making purchases of vegetables from cultivators and passing them on to consumers. It will be effective from tomorrow. Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa has instructed Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya to implement this programme on the instructions of the President. Accordingly, the Army camps countrywide will make direct purchases of vegetables from cultivators in the respective areas and get them down to Colombo for distribution.
Already, 14 consumer centres have been identified for the selling of vegetables. Accordingly, these vegetables will be sold at the Maligawatte Housing Complex, Campbell Park, Hyde Park, Muttiah Road, Torrington, near the Colombo Fort Railway station, Borella, Rajagiriya, Ja-ela, Ekala, Katunayake, Maharagama, Homagama and Kaduwela. Consumers will be able to purchase vegetables at reasonable prices as it does not pass through middlemen.
