President Rajapaksa has emphasized that officials should dedicate themselves to pass on the dividends of development through a proper road network.
President visited the Highways Ministry this morning. Joining in a special discussion, he revealed that the Government had made the highest allocation last year for the Highways Ministry.
He said that the Highways Ministry is entrusted with a significant work load at a time when speedy development was taking place in the country. There is a well experienced group. He said thee expenditure was not an issue as the Finance Ministry had granted all the required funds, which is around 102 billion rupees. More than 50 percent of the development work is handled by the Highways Ministry.
Ministry officials told the President that about 855 kilometres had been developed last year surpassing the expected target. The Ministry carried out this work under the “Maga Neguma” project. Construction of the Matara – Colombo express highway has entered the final phase. It is the intention to open this expressway by June. About 30 percent of construction of the Katunayake – Colombo expressway has been completed. The highway will be ready by 2012. The President asserted that with the expansion of the highways network, the transport service should further expand. Deputy Ministers Nirmala Kotalawela and Rohita Abeygunawardena and Senior officials of the Ministry were present.
