Govt.: LTTE Ships Still In Operation

Jan 6, 2011 12:04:46 PM - thesundayleader.lk

The government has told parliament today (6) afternoon that the LTTE is still in possession of eight ships and that they are being used for various illegal activities.

Chief Government Whip and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has noted that the vessels were being used for illegal activities like human smuggling.
Gunawardena has made this statement in response to a question posed by UNP parliamentarian Gamini Jayawickrema Perera.
According to Gunawardena, the LTTE’s international network was intact even though it was defeated in May, 2009.

He has said that intelligence reports have revealed that the LTTE had acquired 20 ships through various fraudulent means. However, none of them had been registered under its name.

Parliament was informed that the vessel’ used to smuggle Sri Lankan immigrants to Canada is one such ship owned by the LTTE.
The Sri Lanka Navy with the assistance of the Air Force has destroyed 11 vessels owned by the LTTE.
