SC Senate panel endorses immigration bill

Jan 7, 2011 7:14:00 AM - thestate.com
Some South Carolina lawmakers have endorsed a new bill to crack down more on illegal immigration, despite questions about whether parts of the bill violate federal laws.

The State newspaper reported a Senate judiciary subcommittee voted 3-1 Thursday to send the bill to the full judiciary committee when the legislature returns Tuesday.

The subcommittee has been considering for nearly a year a bill similar to Arizona's law that would allow local police to enforce federal immigration laws.

The bill would update a 2008 immigration law in South Carolina, which mostly affected the hiring practices of businesses.

Tammy Besherse with the Appleseed Legal Justice Center opposes the bill, but says she's waiting for staff attorneys to tweak the bill before deciding how to fight the proposal.
