Maj. Gen. John A. Renner, Ret., an Army Ranger and former commanding general at Fort Jackson, has died.
Renner retired in 1994, last serving as deputy commanding general of Allied Land Forces Southeastern Europe, Turkey. He took that post after his time at Fort Jackson, from July 1989 to December 1991, according to a U.S. Army biography.
Renner held the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with V Device, a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, an Air Medal, an Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Ranger Tab and badges for Combat Infantryman, Expert Infantryman, Parachutist and Army General Staff Identification.
He began his service in June 1962 as a Platoon Leader in Fort Ord, Calif.
