The Elections Department has announced that nominations for the 308 dissolved local government bodies will be accepted from the 20th to the 27th of this month.
Minister A.L.M. Athaullah last night issued the gazette notification dissolving the 229 Pradeshiya Sabhas and 34 Urban Councils. Accordingly elections to the 308 dissolved local bodies are scheduled to be held in March. In addition to the Local Bodies dissolved yesterday, elections will be held to 32 local bodies in the North and eight newly established local councils. Accordingly nominations for these local bodies will be accepted from the 20th and continue until the 27th of this month. Meanwhile polls will not be held for any Municipal Council in March. Elections of some Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas have been postponed.
Due to the staging of 2011 Cricket World Cup matches, elections to some Pradeshiya Sabhas in Kundasale and Suriyawewa and the Kolonnawa and Vavuniya Urban Councils in addition to the Municipal Councils will be held on a later date. The government said until the completion of elections, Divisional Secretaries and Local Government Commissioners will be appointed as Competent Authorities to administer the dissolved councils by the President under the powers vested in him through the Constitution. Sources emanating from the Elections Secretariat said that public employees who desire to apply for postal voting could do so from next Monday. Informed sources said that the polls will be held on the 12th of March or a closer date.
