Parliament was yesterday (7) temporarily suspended following a tense situation that erupted in the House.
Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody had to temporarily suspend sittings after governing party members objected to an adjournment motion presented by the main opposition UNP.
The adjournment motion presented by the UNP was to debate the appointment of senior ministers by the President.
Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunwardena objecting to the motion said the constitutional rights of the President to appoint ministers couldn’t be questioned in parliament.
The motion that was presented by Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunge and seconded by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The UNP stated that the appointment of 10 senior ministers was unconstitutional.
