The JVP on Friday (7) commenced its campaign for the forthcoming local government elections with a leaflet distribution campaign near the Colombo Fort Railway Station.
The main leaflet distribution campaign in Colombo was held under the patronage of party seniors. The campaign is to be held in other districts in the country as well.
The main aim of the campaign is to educate the public on the current political situation in the country, JVP Propaganda Secretary and parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said.
The JVP on Thursday (6) announced its decision to contest the local government elections separately under its “bell” symbol.
Speaking to The Sunday Leader, Herath said that after the leaflet distribution campaign, the party would commence district conventions in every district in the country.
“The first district convention will be held on January 13th in Anuradhapura,” he said.
According to Herath, the JVP has always contested the local government elections on its own, as it was only election that really reached out to the grass root level. “It is therefore important for us to take our party policies to the people at the election,” he said.
