The programme mooted by the Army to sell vegetables at low rates is a great success. Marketing outlets are to be increased.
The sale of vegetables via the Army to eliminate difficulties encountered by consumers as a result of the high prices prevailing in the market was started yesterday. The Army make direct purchases from the cultivators. As such, consumers are in a position to purchase them at low rates as it does not pass through the middlemen. The sale of vegetables commenced at 14 locations in the Western Province. Another feature is that the consumers are in a position to buy fresh vegetables. Consumers are displaying a keen enthusiasm in purchasing vegetables from outlets operated by the Army. Under these circumstances, the Army desires to open more marketing centres in the Western Province and in other areas.
The programme is a concept of the Defence Secretary and mooted on the advice of the President. Consumers have highly appreciated this programme and thanked the Government as well as the Army for granting them this relief.
