Initial organizational activities for the local government polls get underway.
Elections for the dissolved local bodies are due to be held in March. Elections will also be held for 32 local councils in the Northern Province. There are eight new local bodies for which elections are to be held. The Kaduwela, Dambulla, Bandarawela and Akkaraipattu local councils have been upgraded to Municipal Councils. Nominations for the elections will be received at the District Secretariats from the 20th of this month. Reports say that initial activities with regard to preparation of documents for the polls have already commenced.
Meanwhile, applications for postal voting are now being received. Public officials who will be engaged in election duty can submit their applications through the Departmental heads. Postal voting applications should be submitted to the Returning Officer of the district in which they are resident. These applications will be received until the 18th of this month. Voter’s lists will be on display from Monday. Main political parties have begun initial organisational activities. General Secretary Susil Premajayantha said that nomination committees of the United People’s Freedom Alliance will be operative from Monday at the district level.
