Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has said that immediate operations have commenced to grant relief to the Eastern polity impacted by torrential rain and floods.
The Minister said that floods are reported in several areas in the East. Batticaloa had experienced a rainfall of 312 mm and also heavy rain had been experienced and is also being experienced in others areas. Many houses are reported to have gone under water. Helicopters are being readied in case of emergency to evacuate the stranded victims. The Minister noted that many had already been evacuated. The District Secretary had been given instructions to provide cooked meals and meet the requirements of the flood victims. He added that necessary grants were being directed to provide relief to these affected persons.
