Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera has said that urgent measures are being taken to provide relief to the Eastern people displaced due to rain and floods.
The Minister said that several areas in the Eastern Province are under water. Batticaloa has received 312 milliliters of rain fall. He said that rain is continuing from morning and a large number of houses and roads in the area have gone under water. The Minister said that certain people are to be evacuated by helicopter. He said that a large number of boats have already been sent to the area and rescue teams are operating. He has informed the Batticaloa Government Agent to provide cooked food instantly whenever required and to intervene in providing other necessities. He said that financial allocations have been made while a stock of goods will also be dispatched from Colombo tomorrow.
