Jan 10, 2011 6:06:18 AM - itnnews.lk

Train services have been affected due to inclement weather. The rail-tracks that have been damaged due to the rain and landslides are being speedily renovated.

Planning Director of Railways Wijaya Samarasinghe said that train services on the Eastern, Upcountry and Kandy-Matale rail tracks are suspended since yesterday due to torrential rains. The upcountry rail track has been cleared of the obstacles while the operations have been limited on the Eastern rail track. He said that areas between Gal-oya and Polonnaruwa are inundated while Welioya and Manampitiya Railway Stations have gone under water. Meanwhile the Valachchenai and Batticaloa Railway Stations are completely flooded with the Batticaloa Station having two to three feet water. Water has reached at the platform level at the Eravur Railway Station.

A few landslides have also been reported. Due to this situation the trains leaving Colombo Fort Railway Station have been limited. The staff and the engineers are jointly working to open the Kandy – Matale rail track during the course of the day. An emergency team has been deployed under the guidance of Minister Kumara Welgama and General Manager A.G. Mahanama to carryout the renovation work.
