700,000 people have been displaced island-wide due to torrential rain and floods.
The affected areas are Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Anuradhapua, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and Matale. Some have been displaced by landslides. 20 have died due to landslides at Getambe in Kandy. 13 have gone missing due to floods in several Districts while another 11 have been seriously injured. 669 houses have been totally damaged while 3320 houses have been partially damaged. Transportation, electricity and telephone facilities have been disrupted in many Districts. The Disaster Management Centre said that measures are in place to provide food, sanitation and other facilities needed by the displaced people. The Government has allocated 90 million rupees in this regard.
Meanwhile, Duty Forecaster of the Met Department Damayanthi Indiketihewage said that the bad weather conditions would continue bringing in more rains to several areas.
