It was 20 years ago today that Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon took over the former county police department.
Looking back, he rattled off a long list of improvements and changes, but said none of them would have happened without the people who work for him.
"I'm most proud of the people in the Sheriff's Office," he said, then took a long pause before continuing. "Part of my job, as I see it, is to create an environment in which people feel able to maximize their potential."
He gives his employees the authority they need to do their jobs and tries to provide them with whatever resources they need. Then he insulates them from political interference and lets them do their jobs, he said.
It's been a big change from the way things were before he took over.
