The UNP’s Working Committee is to decide on Thursday (13) the position with regard to the reforms that were ratified at the party convention on December 12.
UNP Spokesperson and MP Gayantha Karunathileka told a press conference today (10) that whole there have been some requests to postpone the reforms until the end of the local government elections, some other were of the view that the reforms should be completed before the elections in March this year.
However, Karunthileka said a final decision on the matter would be taken at the Working committee meeting this week.
Meanwhile, UNP Hambantota District parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa when inquired by The Sunday Leader said that he was not aware of any proposals either to postpone the reforms or to implement them before the local government elections.
However, he said that priority should be given to the local government elections and the party’s campaign for it. The reforms, he said could be implemented after the elections by about end March.
According to Premadasa, the entire party machinery should be behind its candidates at this election.
