Floods displace 800,000

800,000 are displaced countrywide due to torrential rain. 80 percent of the Polonnaruwa district is inundated.

Several persons have gone missing in floods and landslides in a number of districts including Ampare, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and Matale. Seven are killed in Gatambe, Kandy following landslides. They had been residing in six houses along King Rajasinghe the 2nd Mawatha. Central Province Chief Minister said that their funerals will be conducted with the Chief Minister’s funds in the next few days. 13 persons have gone missing in several districts due to floods. Another five persons have been killed in floods. 11 are critically injured. 3700 houses are partially damaged while 974 are totally damaged. In addition to transport, power supplies and telecommunications are paralysed in many districts. The Disaster Management Centre said that a comprehensive programme has been mooted to meet the essential requirements including lodging, food and sanitary facilities of the displaced persons.
