A Nigerian charged with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009 wants the file held by his former defense lawyers.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO'-mahr fah-ROOK' ahb-DOOL'-moo-TAH'-lahb) says he believes the file contains information from experts who don't believe he was capable of destroying Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam.
Abdulmutallab made the request Monday in a court filing. He fired his lawyers in September and is representing himself with help from Detroit attorney Anthony Chambers.
Abdulmutallab is charged with trying to blow up a plane with about 300 people aboard by igniting an explosive in his underwear. Passengers saw flames and quickly subdued him.
A message seeking comment was left with his former lawyer, Miriam Siefer. Abdulmutallab also asks for permission to skip a hearing Wednesday.
