Opposition political parties are in the process of appointing their respective nominations boards to finalize the nominations list for the forthcoming local government elections.
The main opposition UNP says that although it has held initial interviews with prospective candidates for the party’s nominations lists, the final interviews would be held next week after the appointment of an official nominations board.
The UNP is to appoint its nominations board for the local government elections at the party’s Working Committee meeting scheduled for Thursday (13).
Meanwhile, the Marxist JVP has appointed its nomination board to prepare the lists of candidates for the local government elections.
The board comprises parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and former parliamentarians K.D. Lalkantha, Bimal Ratnayake and Ramalingam Chandrasekara.
JVP sources said the nomination board was expected to complete initial work with regard to the preparation of nomination lists by January 17.
Nomination papers have to be handed over to the Elections Commissioner between January 20 and 27.
