Navy Commander Vice Admiral Tisara Samarasinghe has been promoted to the rank of Admiral with effect from today.
A special Guard of Honour was accorded to him at the Naval Headquarters today. He is due to retire from the 15th of this month. He joined the Navy on 10th September 1974 and is the 16th Navy Commander. He has been contributing immensely to strengthen the regional maritime security in cooperation with the Regional Navies.
Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry said that Rear Admiral D.W.A.S. Dissanayake has been appointed as the new Navy Commander. The appointment is effective from the 15th of this month. He had his academic studies at Mayurapada Vidyalaya in Narammala. He joined the Navy in 1977 as a Cadet Officer. Since then, he had rendered a valuable service for over 33 years. At present, he is the Chief of Staff of the Navy. Rear Admiral Somatilake Dissanayake served as the Northern Naval Commander in the final battle against the terrorists. It is he who succeeded in destroying an enemy vessel for the first time in the Naval history. He also established a record by destroying and seizing more than 30 enemy vessels.
