A 21-year-old woman was killed in a fire of unknown origin at a West Columbia home today.
Her mother, 67, was pulled from the fire alive but was flown to the burn center in Augusta for treatment, said West Columbia fire chief Wyatt Colemen. Her condition is unknown.
Officials did not make public the names of either victim.
Firefighters who got the call shortly after noon found a smoke-filled single-story brick house, one-third of which was enveloped in flames, at 1726 Burnham St.
After firefighters entering through the front door pulled the older woman from the burning house, the ceiling caved in and firefighters had to get out of the house, Coleman said.
