The Government is launching a programme to provide fertilizer and seed paddy for the paddy fields that were destroyed due to the rain. Minister S.M. Chandrasena said that the tanks will be speedily renovated and maximum assistance will be provided to restart cultivation.
The Minister said more than 200 minor irrigation tanks in the country have been damaged. The President has advised to complete the renovation work within one month following the rains. Measures are in place to protect the small tanks in the Anuradhapura District that are being damaged. He said that the leave of Assistant Commissioners, Agrarian Services Officials and Engineers have been cancelled so that they can work jointly with the Farmers’ Associations to carryout the renovation work. More than 200,000 acres of cultivated land has been affected. The President and the Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa have pledged to make allocations to resume cultivation work.
