President Rajapaksa has emphasized that having defeated the separatist expectations of Prabhakaran, he was not prepared to give in to the same demand if made by any others.
The President pointed out that he and his Government had the strength to rout forces against the country in whatever guise they appeared, as ruthless terrorism was vanquished. The President was speaking when he met heads of media establishments at Temple Trees this morning.
It is the duty of the media to help build amity among all communities, directing the country towards the development path, and not contribute to fostering hatred among people and denigrating the motherland. He emphatically stated that this was also the onus and obligation of not only the State media but also the Private media. Propaganda against the country by certain websites and media does neither hinder him nor the Government. But he told the media heads that it was the country that suffer. There are only home grown solutions to problems facing Sri Lanka. He underscored that he would not import solutions from any country to resolve problems in the motherland.
The President pointed out that the Government had no intention of postponing the Local Government polls in the face of the adverse weather conditions experienced in the country. It is the Government Agents and the Elections Commissioner who are vested with the right of taking this decision. The President added that neither he nor the Government had any need to postpone the right of the people to select representatives of their areas.
