Minister Kumara Welgama has said that the Railways Department and the Sri Lanka Transport Board will be made viable institutions using new technology. The Minister expressed this view at a function held at the Maligawatte Railway premises.
The Minister opined that ticketless travel should be minimized. He said that a larger section obtain free SLTB passes. The Security Forces are paying for their passes while the Police and the Parliament are also making payments. He observed that many more obtain free passes and noted that he will not be able to pay salaries if this situation will continue. SLTB and the Railways are not profitable organizations but service oriented institutions. The Minister observed that people have to be satisfied to receive a higher income.
The old factory in the Maligawatte Railway premises was inaugurated after effecting repairs under the patronage of the Minister. The factory has facilities to renovate all types of compartments of trains. Officials of the Railway Department were among those who participated.
