Hindus countrywide commemorate Thai Pongal

Hindus countrywide join in commemorating the Thai Pongal festival on a grand scale.

The main ceremony was held at the Jaffna Central College. Many Parliamentarians participated. A large number of Hindu devotees joined in the religious observances, including the new Rice Festival organized wishing prosperity to the country.

78 rehabilitated LTTE cadres were handed over to their relatives with the mediation of Rehabilitation Commissioner Brig. Sudantha Ranasinghe. It was organized in parallel to the Thai Pongal Festival. The main ceremony was made colourful by a special cultural pageant presented by the rehabilitated LTTE cadres.

Another Thai Pongal festival was commemorated on a grand scale at Elephant Pass with the participation of war heroes who dedicated their lives to creating a conducive environment for the people to live in freedom.

Hindu devotees in Vavuniya commemorated Thai Pongal wishing happiness and prosperity. The Kovils as well all shops and houses were decorated according to our correspondent. The main Thai Pongal festival was held at the Kovil Pudukulam Sivam Kovil with the participation of war heroes.

Another festival was organized at the LTTE rehabilitation camp in Vavuniya. They participated in Poojas wishing peace and success.

Priority was given to religious observances at the commemoration organized at the Sri Badrakali Amman Kovil in Trincomalee. A large number of devotees in the area participated. A notable feature was the people of Batticaloa joining in commemorating Thai Pongal getting involved in special religious observances.

Another Thai Pongal festival was organized by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Tamil division at the Corporation premises. Chairman of the Corporation Hudson Samarasinghe and staff members participated.
