Minister Basil Rajapaksa has emphasized the need to using local food to uplift the nutritional standards of the people.
The Minister said that the local economy is growing strong and the per capita is on the rise. The quantity of food consumed daily has also risen. The health targets of a developed country have been reached. But the Minister emphasized that nutritional wise, it was not so. Focusing special attention on this issue, a Nutritional Committee has been appointed and it is headed by the President himself.. He attributed malnutrition to a change in the food consumption framework. The Minister pointed out that it is the onus of the parents to undertake the cultivation of vegetables and fruits in their home gardens and return to ancient food consumption framework is necessary.
The Minister was speaking at a function organized by the Japan-Sri Lanka Cultural Centre to award scholarships. More than 10 thousand students received scholarships. The ceremony organized under the guidance of the Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera, was attended by members of the Maha Sangha including the Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera and the Catholic clergy. The ceremony was held at the Mahindarama Vihare in Etulkotte. Ministers Susil Premajayantha, Bandula Gunawardena, Patali Champika Ranawaka and Parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatilake were present.
