Aiken Equine Professional Associations has been providing great equine veterinary care in the community for decades, and the practice continues to evolve.
Dr. John Haddon came to Aiken in 1974, and the large animal practitioner from the U.K. has been a veterinarian for 45 years. Haddon recently passed the baton to Dr. Mitch Byrd, who owns Equine Veterinary Services in Southern Pines, N.C. The veterinarians had started the negotiations regarding the practice in March, and the process progressed over the past few months.
"We agreed on the basic outline in the first few days," said Byrd, who assumed control of the practice on Dec. 1, which will now be known as Aiken Equine Associates. "These things are meant to evolve."
The evolution of the practice will still find Haddon and Dr. Linda Hickey very much involved with the operation. It will be business as usual, but with three veterinarians instead of two, said Haddon.
"Part of the agreement was that I wanted to keep working," said Haddon. "I didn't want to quit completely. Mitch and I agreed that I'll keep working for the next year, and longer if it works out. I don't have to do weekends and night calls, which is a blessing."
