Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has said that all irrigation systems that were damaged due to the floods will be renovated within three months. He said that the Government has taken measures to pay compensation for the paddy fields that were destroyed.
The Minister said all communities in Ampara including the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims have had to face colossal damage. He has instructed the officials to complete the renovation of canals and anicuts in the area before the next cultivation season starting in April.
The Minister made this clarification this during a meeting with representatives of Farmers’ Associations in the Ampara area. The Minister inspected the tanks, canals and anicuts in the area. Minister P. Dayaratne and Parliamentarian Sarath Weerasekera were among those present. The Minister pointed out that neither the UNP nor the JVP had provided any relief to the affected people. Although they hold news briefings in Colombo they had not visited the affected areas and assisted in relief operations. The Minister noted that they are unaware of the situation prevailing at the local level and the activities carried out by the Government.
