A Sri Lankan Parliamentary delegation is in Tripoli, Libiya to promote bilateral relations and cooperation between Libya and Sri Lanka.
The delegation of young parliamentarians, led by MP Namal Rajapaksa met with Libyan President Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi in Tripoli. He further extended an invitation on behalf of President Rajapaksa to visit Sri Lanka. Earlier, the Sri Lankan President made two official visits to Libya and invited the Libyan President and the visit is still pending.
The Sri Lankan parliamentary delegation also had a meeting with Mohamed Mahmoud Hijazi, Secretary of General Peoples Committee for Health and Environment at Al hadba, Tripoli. They discussed about the bilateral cooperation and issues relating to education, Health, Labor and Agriculture. In the Agriculture sector matters relating to fishing and about the possibilities of recruiting Sri Lankan fishermen to work in the fisheries industry in Libya was discussed. It is reported that Libya is to undertake official and ministerial level feasibility studies in Sri Lanka to explore possibilities of deepening and widening the bilateral cooperation between Libya and Sri Lanka.
