President Rajapaksa has appreciated the services rendered by Rev. Father Guiseppe Iasso of Mercogliano, Italy to Sri Lanka for more than two decades.
The President said that the services rendered by the Priest, irrespective of race, colour, cast or creed status were significant. The President said he had contributed immensely to the building of communal and religious harmony, and assisting the poor in Sri Lanka. The President made these observations during a meeting at Temple Trees. Rev. Fr. Iasso whose association with Sri Lanka began in 1982 has carried out special community related work in Sri Lanka after the 1983 riots and tsunami of 2004.
After the events of 1983, he built the model village ‘Samagigama’ in Nawalapitiya that housed 60 families with 15 each from the different religious communities. He also made a vital contribution to improving sanitary facilities in the Kandy region. The Priest hoped that the peaceful climate in Sri Lanka would further improve under the President’s leadership. His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and several Parliamentarians were present.
