Inquiry under way into money missing from Lexington County

State Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating what an audit says is about $15,000 missing from the Lexington County Treasurer’s Office.
The revelation came Tuesday after the audit said money was diverted improperly last year. County officials said two employees were fired after the discovery. Payments received from taxpayers were voided by a clerk without managerial review of how the money was handled, the audit said.
“A clerk took advantage of business or personal relationships to obtain supervisory approval without the supervisor performing their due diligence and follow-up procedures,” it said.
The money wasn’t put in the bank for the county as required, it said.
The problem occurred “in some instances” but the audit didn’t define the frequency or amounts involved other than the total.
