The United Nations has today (19) issued an appeal for US$ 51 million to meet the urgent needs of over one million people affected by the heavy rains and floods recently experienced in Sri Lanka.
The UN appeal for funds has been made alongside the three day official visit by UN Assistant Secretary for Emergency Relief Coordination, Catherine Bragg to Sri Lanka.
Bragg is to meet with those affected by the adverse weather conditions and the authorities during her three day visit that is to end on Friday (21).
“This appeal seeks 51 million dollars to enable international partners to support the government in addressing the needs of more than one million flood-affected people over the next six months,” the UN has reportedly said.
The heavy rains and floods affected over one million persons and resulted in the deaths of over 40 persons.
