Vegetable cultivators in Jaffna are now earning an enhanced income, reaping to the maximum the dividends of peace which is in place after the war.
The fertile land in the Jaffna Peninsula is suitable for vegetable as well as fruit cultivation. The peasants did not have freedom to engage in cultivation when the area was in the hands of the LTTE who laid landmines and boobytraps. With the dawn of peace, Jaffna is now reawakening. Many vegetables which are limited only to the hill country are flourishing in Jaffna. Hundreds of acres in the area has been cultivated with vegetables such as Carrot, Beetroot, Cabbage and Beans. A notable feature was the fertile land within camps of the war heroes who shouldered the task of bringing peace to the motherland, being cultivated with varieties of vegetables. The produce in Jaffna is being transported along the A-9 highway. Thus, the cultivators have received an opportunity to enhance their earnings. This is also an impetus to the local economy which is resuscitating speedily.
