Minister Dilan Perera has said that the countries known as ‘Colombo Process Countries’ should come together to insist on higher salaries for expatriate workers.
The Minister said that an association known as ‘Colombo Process Countries’ was formed in Colombo of the countries that send workers overseas. He said that all these countries should come together and present a proposal as another country will then not be able to obstruct the proposal. He said that he has already initiated discussions with these Countries’. The Minister expressed his view at a discussion held with representatives of the foreign employment agencies in the Wayamba Province. He noted that he will present number of such proposals to be passed at the meeting of the representatives of ‘Colombo Process Countries’, expected to be held in Dhaka, Bangaladesh this year. The Minister said the proposals are being presented with the aim of increasing the salaries and benefits received by the Sri Lankan migrant workers. Parliamentarian Nimal Wijesinghe and Chairman of the Foreign Employment Bureau Attorney at Law Kingsley Ramawaka were amongst those who participated.
