A programme of developing 1000 secondary schools has been launched under the Mahinda Chintana policy.
The first school was vested in the students by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. The Maampuriya Roman Catholic Sinhalese / Tamil Mixed School in Puttalam was handed over to the students. It is the first school to be developed under the programme. The Prime Minister said that none of the countries of the world except Sri Lanka provide free education. He expressed confidence that the parents and the teachers will make the maximum benefit of the system. Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena said that in order to create an intellectual society, education should be provided without differences and horizons of free education should be expanded. He said that they would make every change required in education, to create children who would not be a burden but a resource to the world. Chief Minister of the Wayamba Province Athula Wijesinghe was amongst the large number of people who were present.
