Canals widened in Polonnaruwa

Canals in the Polonnaruwa area are being widened facilitating the water to flow freely.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that illegal squatters near the canals will be soon removed from those locations. He said that most of the people affected by the floods were illegal squatters. The Minister stated this when he made an inspection tour of the irrigation projects including the Kahambiliya Oya which were inundated due to recent floods. The Minister took measures to renovate the irrigation systems under the Kaudulu-wewa scheme. The illegal squatters who are to be removed from the area will be resettled under the Moragahakande scheme. Meanwhile text books were distributed amongst school children who were affected due to floods in the Medirigiriya Divisional Secretariat area under the patronage of the Minister. The Minister took measures to donate cheques worth 5000 rupees each, amongst 435 families. The area belongs to the Mahaweli “D” Zone.
